The Mongolian government is looking for a financial benefactor since it wanted to eliminate the massive Sovietera debt to bolster its popularity as an election approached. Ivanhoe Mines Ltd., Vancouver-based mining company purchased $50 million in Mongolian government treasury bills, providing the crucial final piece of a financing package that allowed the government to negotiate the retirement of its Soviet debt.
