American philanthropy has compiled a record achievement, and philanthropic contributions have more than doubled since 1966, with individuals giving most of their total incomes. Some scholars of philanthropy and members of the charity community have pointed to both donations and to America's unparalleled record of philanthropically financed scientific and educational achievements, to conclude that the US is the foremost among nations, where philanthropy has met with widespread success.

Prison reform: Throw away the key
Article Abstract:
The 1970s saw an increase in crime rate in the United States, leading to proposals of increasingly tougher prison sentences for criminals. The idea that prisons should aim to rehabilitate prisoners was discarded, and several punitive laws that allowed mandatory minimum sentences for even petty crimes were enforced.
