James Fairfax
Article Abstract:
James Fairfax, the former chairman of John Fairfax Ltd., would be remembered as a young man who lost the family inheritance, as his legacy was the forced sale and the break-up of Australia's oldest newspaper empire and the eventual return to public ownership. With tact and guile, he led a group of deeply conservative men to recognize that their responsibilities required them not only to allow, but also to encourage diversity of opinion, comment and reporting.
