Reinventing silicon circuits: mighty chips
Article Abstract:
Semiconductor devices are the building blocks of computer chips and consumer electronics products, and the use of semiconductor devices, in the 1990s, will become more critical. The development of clever circuitry is an important goal for the US semiconductor industry, but the cost of building manufacturing plants is becoming too expensive. Computer chips are expected to become more specialized, and performance is expected to improve dramatically; one million transistors now can fit on a chip and close to 100 million transistors will be able to fit on a chip by the end of the decade. The development of other technologies in the 1990s, including massive parallel processing, will have an increasing effect on the semiconductor industry.
