Fort McMurray, Alberta, was once thought to be a safeguard for Canada' s energy future. The soil beneath McMurray contains extensive deposits of tar sand. As the country's energy priorities shifted away from oil self-sufficiency, the area's importance dwindled, but not its community spirit.
