Kingsway Financial chalks up record profit

Kingsway Financial Services Inc, a Toronto, Ontario-based high-risk auto insurer, reported a record income of C$31 million for 1998, up 40% from the previous year. Despite an almost 20% increase in the number of shares outstanding, share profit rose 18% to C$0.86 a share in 1998 from a year ago. Revenue grew from C$196.3 million to C$352.2 million in 1998, while assets increased to a little more than C$1 billion from C$511.2 million.

Mobile phone makers unite on standards

New standards for mobile telephone manufacturers have been adopted by the world's leading companies, including Motorola Inc., Nokia Corp. and L. M. Ericsson A/S. Industry analysts estimate that there will be about 1 billion mobile phone users and 600 million mobile Internet users in the world by 2004.
