Labor Adopts New Strategy
Article Abstract:
Labor unions are increasingly focused on preserving jobs, demonstrating a new realism. Rather than demanding so much that companies cannot compete, unions are sometimes even accepting wage freezes, while holding out against major concessions on health benefits. Recent accords with Verizon and Goodyear include broad job security assurances, and United Auto Workers' accords with the Big Three allow for some plant closures in return for saving hundreds of thousands of other jobs.
