Tires to be recalled
Article Abstract:
Firestone is recalling millions of possibly faulty lighttruck and sport- utility vehicle tires, especially those installed on Ford Motor vehicles. The Firestone ATX, ATX II and Wilderness tires are being investigated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration since May 2000 because of several complaints and four deaths in accidents. It is claimed that the vehicles skidded or rolled over because the treads peeled off.

Documents imply Firestone knew of tire trouble in '94
Article Abstract:
Bridgestone/Firestone has discussed the problem of tread separation in the Firestone ATX tires since 1994. A deposition by Robert Martin, a retired vice pres of quality assurance in the company, revealed that claims data showing tread-separation problems were presented to most departments and to CEO and Chmn of US operations Masatoshi Ono. The documents and pupblic statements challenge Bridgestone/Firestone claims that the company was not aware of potentially fatal tread-separation problems until Jul 2000, just before the recall of the tires on Aug 9.
