Life goes on in Russia despite the severe economic dislocations plaguing the former Soviet Union. Young people are still getting married despite economic hardship and the high Russian divorce rate. The Pushkin Museum is looking for private sponsors to replace funds once supplied by the government.

A friendly line of credit

Canada has resumed shipping grain to Russia, even though Russia's overdue debt to Canada totals $100 million. During the past two years, Canada has granted Russia $2 billion worth of loans, including a $1.7 billion line of credit with the Canadian Wheat Board.

Economic conditions in Russia have declined since Pres Boris Yeltsin began his reforms. Food production dropped 23% in the first six months of 1992. Social conditions throughout the rest of the former republics have also declined.
