Australian film festivals held in June at Sydney and July at Melbourne promise high attendance for many innovative motion pictures and directors. Sydney director Gayle Lake wants to expand audiences and diversify programming, while Melbourne audiences are expected to increase 75% over 1998 under director Sandra Sdraulig. Male directors will no longer dominate programming for these festivals.

Ian Abdulla's painting of life along the river Murray in South Australia, in the 1950's & 1960's has achieved remarkable commercial and critical success. The play called Riverland, written by Rodney Scott and directed by Wesley Enoch, which will premiere at the Adelaide festival in March 2004, is inspired by his work.
