A dire shortage of equipment, trained labour, and explosives is resulting in the delay of many mining projects such as the $1 billion Boddington gold development project in Western Australia's Darling Ranges. The shortage has come at a time when fuel and steel prices have risen, causing huge increases of 30-40% in mine development and operating costs.

The Prominent Hill, in the South Australian outback, is the site of a signficant minerals discovery. Although the land is completely flat, dusty and hot, 25 stories underneath it lies a rich uranium, copper and ore deposit that will very likely become a profitable mine. Minotaur Resources made the discovery.
