The bitter contest between Kim Beazley and Simon Crean for the leadership of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) is reported. John Howard's coalition government won the election against Peter Costello, but in contrast to the contest between Crean and Beazley both Howard and Costello managed a distinctly cool relationship at the top of politics when they complemented each other and gave an impression that all is well and happy in the party.
