Bell Atlantic, AirTouch edge toward $45B deal

Bell Atlantic Corp is negotiating for the acquisition of AirTouch Communications for $45 billion in stock. The boards of both companies met Jan 3, 1999, to evaluate Bell's acquisition proposal. The acquisition will integrate wireless network services offered by Bell Atlantic on the East Coast and by AirTouch on Western markets. The combined operations of the two companies will establish a group that is competitive against industry leaders AT and T Corp, Sprint Corp and Intel Corp.

Global's new frontier: $11B deal expands U.S. telecom access

Global Crossing Ltd's move to acquire Frontier Corp in a $11.2-bil deal will expand the Bermuda-based telecommunications company's access to the US market. Frontier, a second tier local and long-distance carrier headquartered in New York, operates in 120 cities in the US. The deal will also rev up Global's plan to position and expand its portfolio of services, especially on the Internet.
