The Australian government's plans to completely sell off Telstra threaten the seats of marginal members of parliament as the 1998 election approaches. Health minister John Wooldridge is planning to run for a safer seat, but some backbenchers lack this option. Prime Minister John Howard is losing his political support. Some premiers are even making threats to campaign against him.
