Misery on the markets: higher rates spell trouble for stocks and home buyers
Article Abstract:
Canadian banks increased mortgage rates by .05% after Federal Reserve Chmn Alan Greenspan initiated a similar hike in the US in Mar 1997. This caused stock markets in both countries to plunge and the Canadian dollar to fall to 71.81 cents, its lowest level in two years. It may also hurt the housing market.

Why it costs more to top up the gas tank; the long winter pushed up oil prices
Article Abstract:
Gasoline prices averaged around 63 cents a litre in Canada during Apr 1996, seven cents higher than they were in fall 1995. The major reasons for the increase are dwindling reserves and a boost in demand for heating oil during the cold winter. If Iraq reenters the market, prices may go down.
