Manufacturers' shipments increase 1% in May

Canadian manufacturing companies posted a 1% increase in shipments from Apr to May 1999. Statistics Canada reports that manufacturers shipped $39.9 billion worth of goods for May. Companies had minimal order book activity for the period, as unfilled orders increased only 0.3% to $49.2 billion and inventories posted a 0.5% gain to $50.3 billion. Increased motor vehicle production and increased employment are expected to boost manufacturers' markets in the future.

Factory shipments rise in month

Industry analysts said that Canada's manufacturing industry has surpassed expectations by showing an 0.3% increase of factory shipments to $45 billion for January. Statistics Canada's new report also reveals that warehouse stockpiles were being replinshed.
