Merger seen as sign of consolidation

The proposed $115-billion acquisition of Sprint Corp by MCI WorldCom Inc is expected to usher in a new wave of consolidation in Canada's telecommunication industry. Industry analysts said that the global telecom business, including Canada, will be shared by four to five megacompanies. In addition, international trade negotiations will break open foreign ownership restrictions which serve to protect the domestic telecom sectors of Canada and other smaller countries.

Top minister calls for bank mergers
Article Abstract:
One of the top economic ministers in Ottawa wants federal government to approve bank mergers. Industry Minister David Emerson believes that they cannot stop them from consolidating, or are simply going to render them second-or third-level players in the world economy.
