In the aftermath of the December 2004 tsunami that ravaged parts of South Asia, Australian Prime Minister John Howard and Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer decided that Australia would become the worldEs biggest aid donor to the calamity. The global and domestic implications of this unprecedented action, for both Australia and its surrounding regions, are discussed.

A Turkish road-building company completed the road-widening work of the approach to Anzac Cove. The road works were believed to be disturbing human bones due to which the Australian government was agitated leading to the removal of Air Vice-Marshal (rtd.) Gary Beck from the Australian Office of War Graves.
