Adobe's typeface program granted copyright by U.S
Article Abstract:
Adobe Systems Inc has received the first copyright registration granted by the US Copyright Office for a computer program that generates a particular style of type. The victory is a partial one for Adobe, whose Postscript software is the industry leader, because the copyright only covers the computer program that produces the letters, and not the design of the letters themselves. Adobe will still pursue protection by asking congress to classify typefaces as industrial designs and protect them for 10 years. The existing copyright makes it possible for another vendor to create the exact same type design by using a different program to generate it. Adobe feels the issue is important because of the growth of the desktop publishing market that uses the typefaces.

Judge paves way for Apple copyright trial
Article Abstract:
Apple Computer Inc gains ground in its three-year copyright lawsuit against Microsoft Corp and Hewlett Packard Co after Federal Judge Vaughn R. Walker ruled against motions by the defendants. Walker's ruling clears the way for a trial but does not necessarily strengthen Apple's case. The lawsuit by Apple claims that Microsoft's Windows 2.03 graphical user interface and Hewlett Packard's New Wave software violate copyright. Apple's copyright is for a graphical user interface (GUI) that makes computers easy to use, and the interface has contributed substantially to the success of Apple computers. Walker indicates that the case will revolve around specific features of the Apple interface and not around the concept of 'look and feel.'
