Big truck makers evaded pollution rules
Article Abstract:
Mack Trucks Inc, Volvo Truck Corp, Caterpillar Inc and several other heavy-duty diesel engine manufacturers will pay a fine of $83 million and appropriate $1 billion for environmental improvements in an out-of-court agreement with US government. Transport Canada has already started negotiating with companies to secure part of the amount agreed with US officials. The EPA said installed software in trucks helped in emission controls, although vehicles still released a substantial amount of hazardous substances.
