MindSpring, EarthLink connect to challenge AOL

MindSpring will merge with EarthLink Network Inc to create a new company that would challenge the largest Internet service provider in the US, America Online Inc. EarthLink, the merged company, will have three million customers compared with AOL, which serves 18 million customers. The terms of the merger calls for MindSpring shareholders to receive one share in the new ISP and EarthLink shareholders to receive 1.6 shares.

SBC deal boosts prodigy
Article Abstract:
Prodigy Services Co agreed to sell 4.3% stake to local phone giant SBC Communications Inc. The deal helps Prodigy become the exclusive Internet brand and provider of Internet access for SBC's 650,000 current Internet access customers. With SBC's subscribers, Prodigy now enjoys a total membership of more than 2 million compared to just 430,000 in 1998. Prodigy will also take the No 3 spot after American Online Inc and the combined MindSpring and EarthLink, which are going to merge.
