Small wireless firms may be targets
Article Abstract:
The consolidations among small wireless carriers that employ a digital standard called GSM, or Global Standard for Mobile, will be the next wave of activities in the telecommunications industry. GSM firms, which include PowerTel, Omnipoint, Aerial and Western Wireless, do not have sufficient capital to expand their networks. Shares of numerous GSM firms have dropped, thus making them targets for takeover. It was not determined which among the GSM firms would become acquirers or sellers, but British Telecommunications and MCI WorldCom were named as potential buyers.

Ahead: cheaper calls
Article Abstract:
Rates for long-distance phone calls are expected to be lower in the coming years following policy changes implemented by the Federal Communications Commission. One of the changes made was the lowering of access charges from 3 cents a minute to 2.4 cents a minute. The introduction of a flat- rate system to replace the traditional selling of service by the minute has made the lower fees possible.
