Movies soon could be just a click away
Article Abstract:
Cable operators are expected to provide competition to 28,000 video stores in the US with the offering of video on demand. The new technology, boosted with the arrival of new generation of digital cable boxes, will allow subscribers to rely on their remote controls for a supply of movies they want to watch. At stake in the competition between cable operators and video stores is the over 83 million families who own VCRs and who will spend around $8 billion in 1998 to rent videos. Over 1999, operators such as Cablevision Systems and Time Warner are expected to either lay out or test video on demand in around 50 cities.
