Mpact soars with buyer in wings

Mpact Immedia Corp. shares increased 18% as speculation continued to rise about the identity of a potential buyer. The Montreal, Quebec-based electronic commerce software firm said that it is talking with an industry participant interested in acquiring some portion of the firm. Mpact's share rose by C$1.95 to post a 52-week high of C$12.50 on the Montreal Exchange. Among the interested buyers include BCE Inc. of Montreal, which competes directly in the Internet-access industry via its Sympatico brand, Microsoft Corp. and Compaq Computer Corp. Both Microsoft and Compaq have recently signed sales partnerships with Mpact.

Newbridge posts fiscal year loss

Newbridge Networks Corp., a telecommunications network equipment firm based in Kanata, Ontario, Canada, reported a loss of C$18.3 million for fiscal 1998, mainly due to restructuring costs and the burden caused by its UB Networks division. The loss prompted the company to implement a management shakeup, including the appointment of Alan Luiz as new president and chief operating officer. Luiz, formerly from Compaq Computer Corp., replaces Peter Charbonneau, who will become vice-chairman and will lead the company's investment committee.

Discreet Logic boss steps down for second time
Article Abstract:
Montreal, Quebec-based Discreet Logic Inc.'s chief executive and president, Richard Szalwinski, has for the second time opted to resign from his positions in the company. Szalwinski, who will retain his position as the company's chairman, believes that he has already achieved his goal of guiding Discreet Logic away from its strategy for business expansion that resulted to losses for the firm. Szalwinski also cited that a less-reclusive head is necessary to boost Discreet Logic's declining stock prices.
