NCR to enter mainframe market
Article Abstract:
NCR Corp's NCR 3600 mainframe computer, which starts at $850,000 and will go as high as $8 million, is the company's first mainframe computer. Industry observers note that the machine is critical to computer maker's future. NCR is targeting the product towards distributed computing, which includes networked microcomputers and workstations. The new mainframe computer is composed multiple Intel Corp 80486 microprocessors, using between eight and 288 of the chips. The 3600 will provide users with the ability to do big jobs for less money; competing mainframe computers cost as much as $20 million. Potential customers include those that have many microcomputers accessing large data bases and requiring quick response times.

Cray product seen as end of an era
Article Abstract:
Cray Research Inc introduces its newest supercomputer, the Cray Y-MP C90. The machine, which uses as many as 16 microprocessors, is four times faster than its most powerful predecessors. Even so, scientists say the Y-MP C90 marks the end for its class of computers, which were pioneered by Cray Research. The Y-MP is not a 'massively parallel' computer, and it is that sort of machine, with hundreds or even thousands of processors linked together, that seems to represent the future. Cray Research itself in now working to develop a massively parallel system.
