Canada aims to avoid U.S. lumber war

The Canadian government suggested that special envoys should be used with the United States to help negotiate a new softwood lumber agreement. The current agreement, in which Canada bought five years of trade peace by capping exports, expires on March 31st 2001.

Native groups, environmentalists align against lumber free trade

The Grand Council of the Crees of Quebec, the Interior Alliance and other native groups and environmental protection groups are criticizing Canada's support of free trade in the lumber industry. The issue has been highlighted by the coming end of the U.S.-Canadian softwood lumber agreement.

Study absolves Canada in wood war
Article Abstract:
A new report from the Vancouver, BC-based Industrial Wood and Allied Workers of Canada, which was authored by Doug Smyth, says that timber shortages and efficient lumber mills are the cause of mill shutdowns in the United States. The report, which focuses on the trade dispute over wood products between Canada and the United States, attacks a proposal by the U.S. Department of Commerce to impose tariffs on Canadian wood.
