SBC's troubles bruise regional Bells

SBC Communications' warning of lowered expectations for 2001 has affected the other regional Bell phone companies. It also weakens the view that the regional Bell phone companies are immune to the stock market malaise that has infected most technology stocks. SBC shares dropped 12.7% to close at $46.56 after it announced that it expected 2001 earnings per share growth of 11% to 14%. Wall Street expected growth of 14.5%.

Investors snub Lucent spinoff Agere on first day of trading

Agere Systems saw its share price rise by just 2 cents from its initial price of $6 during the company's IPO after investors stayed away from the market. Agere said that it expects to post a significant operating loss in FY 2001 after big customers have rescheduled or canceled their orders due to a slowing US economy. Agere's performance shows how the fate of telecommunications equipment providers are dependent on each otehr.
