New drive by Sematech for funding
Article Abstract:
Sematech (Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology Institute), the semiconductor industry consortium, which is a cooperative effort that aims to improve American competitiveness in semiconductors, wants the government to support and fund its efforts, but Sematech could be in trouble both with Congress and with the Bush administration. The administration wants to avoid favoring particular industries. The administration might, however, be open to an approach that is described as 'precompetitive generic' technology development. Sematech is shifting the focus of its efforts, putting more emphasis on testing manufacturing equipment and developing software that would automate semiconductor factories. Sematech has outlined its plans for the future, which it calls 'precompetitive generic.'

After a long fight, U.S. yields on a vital chip-making tool
Article Abstract:
GCA Corp's going out of business in May 1993 signals the end of the long fight of the US government and the US semiconductor industry to keep the manufacturing of photolithography equipment in the US. GCA is one of only two American manufacturers of the equipment, a vital machinery in the production of silicon wafers. The other company, the Silicon Valley Group Inc, is negotiating with Canon Inc, a Japanese competitor, to license its technology in exchange for Canon's financial assistance. The developments indicate that American semiconductor companies will have to continue to depend on Japanese suppliers for the main tool used in computer chip manufacture. Canon and Nikon hold 80 percent of the photolithography equipment market while ASM, a Dutch company, holds most of the rest.
