Microsoft's 'chief software architect' Bill Gates sees the consumer electronics field as the next big area of growth for the software company. Its first product will the X-Box video game system which Gates feels can take a big segment of the electronic game market. Gates forecasts that the fusion of software of electronics is just starting to impact markets, noting the popularity of MP3 players and digital cameras.

Rift on software arouses anxieties; I.B.M. and Microsoft will cooperate less
Article Abstract:
The decision by IBM and Microsoft to pursue separate paths in developing software causes anxiety in the computer industry. The question of whether technical standards will be set by the company that makes the computers or by the company that makes the programs that run on them - or whether a free-for-all will ensue, with no single standard that results - concerns both software developers and computer users. IBM and Microsoft have diverged partly because of Microsoft's success with the Windows 3.0 graphical user interface (GUI). IBM had favored OS/2, the operating system, but Microsoft's success with Windows forces IBM to seek an accommodation. Now, under their new arrangement, each company will develop its preferred program - the OS/2 operating system with Presentation Manager for IBM, and MS-DOS and Windows for Microsoft.
