Technology boom too tempting for many government scientists

The high-technology boom, the abundance of start-up companies and the economic appeal of the private sector are luring scientists away from government research laboratories in ever-growing numbers. Administrators fear the exodus will have a dire effect on the quality of government-sponsored research. Scientists have been influenced by the government's handling of the investigation into Los Alamos National Laboratory scientist Wen Ho Lee and the fact that most can double their salaries in the private sector.

No cable? No D.S.L.? Try satellite; third broadband alternative now offers fast 2-way connection
Article Abstract:
Recently, StarBand has announced two-way satellite services for fast broadband Internet access. Download speeds are promised to be up to 500 kilobits per second, slightly slower than D.S.L. or cable modem. Upload will be at 150 kbps or so. Service requires installation of a 24-inch dish antenna and a satellite modem, plus installation fee and a monthly fee. The company touts its ability to provide service to anyone, anywhere, particularly where D.S.L. and cable modem can't reach.
