Telecommunications equipment manufacturers are preparing to expand the capacity of the Internet and data networks to meet the increasing demand for high-speed connections. The move by such companies as Lucent, Nortel, and Alcatel is a response to the growing Internet traffic, which increases by around 300% annually. New technologies in fiber optics are being developed to propel the growth of telecommuting and video-conferencing.

World's second-largest telecommunications equipment manufacturer Nortel Networks positioned itself at the crux of the Internet World Wide Web's power in 1997 by building fiber-optic systems to move Internet data. As a result, it carries 75% of North America's Internet traffic in 2000 and its share value has rocketed roughly 1,500% since 1995. The company's biggest challenge is to adapt to its phenomenal growth that threatens to overwhelm it even as customers merge and become more demanding and industry rivals rapidly catch up.

Bell Atlantic can sell N.Y. long-distance

Bell Atlantic Corp has obtained permission from the Federal Communications Commission to deliver long-distance service in New York, NY, and intensify competition in the area. Consumer advocates are supportive of the move by the regulators, stating that the entry of Bell Atlantic into the long- distance business in New York would put more pressure on competitors. The telephone company will start its service in New York on Jan 5, 2000, targeting customers without calling plans.
