Nortel leaves employees at home
Article Abstract:
Northern Telecom Ltd. of Brampton, Ontario, operates one of the largest telecommuting programs in Canada as part of its employee satisfaction strategy. The telecommuting program allows Northern Telecom employees to send confidential material within the company's network through E-mail, a monthly audio conference call, and an occasional video conference. The program is viewed by Northern Telecom as critical to making its employees happy, saving increasingly scarce space, and catching the attention of new, highly qualified professionals. Out of the company's 10,500 workers in Ottawa, 905 workers are telecommuters, with about 60% working part-time.

Steel makers launch assualt on imports
Article Abstract:
North American steel producers are filing anti-dumping cases to stop the flood of cheap imports from Russia, Japan, South Korea and other countries. Canadian steel makers have filed anti-dumping cases on cold-rolled steel and will probably file additional action hot-rolled steel in less than 10 days. US firms are expected to announce that they are aiming to put a stop to imports by filing their own anti-dumping cases on hot-rolled steel. The cheap imports from Europe and Asia are being pointed at as the cause of lower prices for steel in the spot market and layoffs at some North American steel companies.
