Article Abstract:
Nortel Networks Corp. (Brampton, Ont.), Canada's largest high-tech company, has sealed a US$3-billion information technology (IT) deal with Computer Sciences Corp. (El Segundo, CA). Although Nortel has not announced any layoffs of the 5,000 people employed in the IT department, it will transfer 2,000 employees, including 720 in Canada, to Computer Sciences. Computer Sciences will manage Nortel's computer help-line support, data centers and computer infrastructure. Through its outsourcing deals, Nortel expects to become a virtual company and save costs. Although company officials would not disclose how much the company expects to save from outsourcing its information service group to Computer Sciences, Nortel's head of manufacturing Chahram Bolouri indicated that the company expects to save up to $300-million a year from all of its outsourcing deals.
