Northwest raises bar on miles for mutual fund investments
Article Abstract:
Northwest Airlines, in cooperation with Warburg Pincus Funds, is offering 2.5 frequent-flier miles for every $10 invested in mutual funds, the most generous offer available in the market today. Frequent-flier miles in exchange for mutual fund investments has been in existence since 1991 but Northwest's latest offer is definitely better than American Airlines' one mile for every $10 and Delta Air Lines and Charles Schwab's one mile for every $30 in the balance. Northwest is also giving a bonus of 1,200 miles for a first-time investment of $5,000 and above.

Why Welch did an about-face on GE's strategy
Article Abstract:
GE Chmn and CEO Jack Welch admitted that his No 1 or No 2 business strategy has been taken to nonsensical levels by an insidious bureaucracy. In 1995, Welch said a group of middle managers pointed out to him that the obsession to become the best or the second-best may be causing GE to lost opportunity or profit. He added that the revelation is a major factor in GE's double-digit growth rates in the latter half of the 1990s.
