Lernout is declared insolvent
Article Abstract:
An Ypres, Belgium court declared Lernout and Hauspie Speech Products software company insolvent, refuting the company's call for a Chapter 11-type ruling. The court pointed out that Lernout's debt was 520 million euros, but sales of the company's assets would not even be close to 25 million euros (around $22 million). SpeechWorks International closed in to bid on Lernout's speech technology business at $12 million while MedQuist offered $25 million for the medical unit. Massachusetts speech recognition company Dragon Systems, which Lernout bought last year, is now penniless. Lernout's U.S. bankruptcy status will be decided later.
