Novell to try to make Unix more acceptable
Article Abstract:
Novell Inc announces that it will begin offering computer vendors complete, standard, fully functional versions of the Unixware operating system to bundle with their machines. By doing so, the company hopes to encourage industry acceptance of Unix as an attractive alternative to Microsoft Windows NT for downsizing from mainframe to client/server computing. Novell currently sells its commercial Unixware version of Unix through retailers to computer users. Having acquired Unix Systems Laboratories from AT&T in Jun 1993, Novell owns both the Unix trademark and the original Unix technology. Based on a Unigram.X newsletter report, the industry had expected Novell to announce it was furnishing Unix gratis to the X/Open Inc industry consortium so that it could develop an open Unix standard. Chmn and CEO Ray Noorda says Novell continues to negotiate with X/Open, and will work with other vendors to find a common foundation for all Unix versions.

Buying software concerns

Sanjay Kumar, VP of planning at Computer Associates International Inc, oversees the acquisition and merger strategy at his company. In the week of Sep 13, 1991, Computer Associates agreed to acquire Pansophic Systems Inc, Lisle, IL, for $290 million. And a week before that Computer Associates bought On-Line Software International Inc for $120 million. According to Kumar, Computer Associates will integrate the acquisitions thoroughly and quickly.
