Novell's leader set to duke it out with Microsoft
Article Abstract:
Novell Inc. chairman and CEO Eric Schmidt has shifted the firm in a new direction since he took over about a year ago. From 1995 to 1996, the Provo, UT-based firm strayed from its flagship networking software, NetWare, into unrelated areas like word processing software that saw its revenue decline by one-third. Schmidt has embarked on a new strategy that has regained Novell's profitability and revenue growth through inventory cutbacks, employee layoffs and renegotiation of its marketing agreements. The firm's market share, which has constantly been affected by Microsoft Corp.'s Windows NT program will be tested as both firms release their new versions of Windows NT and NetWare scheduled for late 1998.
