Oil giants report earnings doubled

The two largest oil companies in the US have reported more than doubled earnings for 2nd qtr 2000. The stellar earnings posted by Chevron and ExxonMobile were attributed to wider refinery margins and not retail gas sales. ExxonMobile's earnings have risen by 123% from the same period in 1999 while Chevron's earnings rose by 140%. Analysts believe that hte profits may have already reached their peak with earnings growth at major oil companies expected to slow to 61% in the 3rd qtr adn 35% in the 4th qtr.
