The 25 USA Today All-Star Mutual Funds for 1999 beat the Standard and Poor's 500-stock index, with the average All-Star fund gaining 23.6% last year compared to 10.6% for the index. Kobrick Capital was rated the best performing mutual fund, gaining 89.1% in the past 12 months compared to a 10.5% gain for the index. S&P may have been beaten by fund managers, but the nation's favorite stock index remains a tough contender.

College plans prove profitable

Mutual fund management companies and brokerage are rushing to obtain the few state 529 college-savings plans that have not been awarded. These companies look forward to millions of management fees if they are able to market the popular plans nationwide. The 529 college-savings plans lets parents, grandparents, even friends, contribute to tax-deferred investment account, which the beneficiary can use to pay tuition and expenses at any college in the US.

Mutual funds in a funk?

The success of the mutual fund industry, as evidenced by assets of $5.7 trillion, has touched only a few companies, while others suffered financially. Although just a handful of funds have liquidated, an increasing number are selling assets for low prices. The success in the industry, which was fuelled by the bullish market, was experienced by mutual funds that looked on the 50 largest stocks and Internet stocks on US stock exchanges.
