Oil price retreats but fear grips market

Global oil markets remain gripped by fear of supply shortages, market disruptions and terrorist strikes, even though the price of oil retreated from another record high. The price of US light crude for September 2004 delivery fell 53 cents (US) to $46.05 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

U.S. retail sales plunge 3.7% in Nov

The U.S. Department of Commerce has released a new report on U.S. retail sales that shows the largest monthly drop in almost a decade. Economists said that corporate layoffs contributed to a sharp drop in consumer confidence and spending for November 2001.
