Oshawa Group's Wolfe family at crossroads
Article Abstract:
Oshawa Group Ltd., a Toronto, Ontario-based food retailer, is offered to be acquired by Empire Company Ltd. of Stellarton, Nova Scotia. The acquisition offer comes as the long-time family-owned food business is showing tepid performance in the competitive grocery industry. Empire is offering to purchase the Wolfe family's controlling block of common shares in Oshawa. If the Wolfe family decides to accept the offer, it would mean giving up the almost 90-year-old family business. Another evidence of change is that Oshawa's board passed over Jonathan Wolfe, president and chief operating officer of Oshawa, for the position of chief executive officer. The board is looking for an outsider to give the company new life.
