Ottawa hints at end to magazine negotiations
Article Abstract:
The office of the Canadian Trade Minister said the federal government should consider whether its talks with the US on Canada's controversial magazine bill are making progress before going on with the talks. Mid- level trade officials from both countries have been holding discussions in a bid to avoid a broader trade war. The bill proposes to effectively ban foreign split-run magazines in Canada. Split-run editions are Canadian editions of foreign magazines that carry little Canadian content.

WTO deems $3-billion Canada Account loan fund illegal
Article Abstract:
The World Trade Organization (WTO) has ruled against Canada's C$3 billion loan fund for buyers of Canadian exports. Sources say the WTO considers the Canada Account, which is principally controlled by the Minister of International Trade, an illegal subsidy under WTO regulations. The ruling, however, is not yet final and a final decision is expected to be released by early Apr 1999.
