Ottawa urged to restrict cheap import of steel

The Canadian government has been asked to impose new tariffs on imported steel by the Steel Working Group. The committee, which was organized by Finance Minister John Manley, also recommended that the United States be exempted from steel duties.

Proposal on steel dumping held up
Article Abstract:
Some Canadian cabinet ministers believe that a proposed compromise over foreign steel dumping is not sufficient to stop the practice. The minsters said that the compromise does not provide adequate protection for domestic steel makers.

Beef set to flow across border

The U.S. has terminated a ban on meat cuts that it deems are at risk of having mad-cow disease. This could mean that up to 50% of Canada's beef trade with the U.S. will begin crossing over by the end of August 2003.
