PC Tools and Norton get major overhauls
Article Abstract:
Microsoft Corp has released its DOS upgrade, MS-DOS 5.0, and the package includes various utilities that used to be available only in packages such as Central Point Software's PC Tools Deluxe or Symantec's Norton Utilities. But this does not mean that PC Tools and Norton Utilities are replaced: both are offered in enhanced versions - PC Tools 7.0, which costs $179; and Norton Utilities 6.0, which also costs $179. Both packages can be bought for less money depending on the circumstances of a purchase: a customer upgrading from PC Tools 6.0, for example, will pay $49; PC Tools is offering a limited-time special 'power user' offer for only $59; and Norton Utilities is offered by some dealers for $99 when purchased with MS-DOS 5.0. PC Tools 7.0 is the 'Swiss Army knife' of utility packages, with something for everyone; but Norton Utilities is said to have more technical features and depth. Depending on a user's needs, either package can be recommended.

For expert or novice, more choices for desktop publishing
Article Abstract:
Microsoft Corp, Aldus Corp and Quark Inc introduce new versions of their Publisher, Pagemaker and Xpress desktop publishing programs that make the task of producing well-presented business documents even easier. Microsoft's $199 Publisher 2.0 for Windows is aimed at beginning desktop publishers. Besides its low price, its most impressive features are the Page Wizards collection of prefabricated style guides and the Cue Card online help utility, which allow users to produce such typical documents as monthly calendars without reading the manual. Aldus's $895 Pagemaker 5.0 for Windows combines greater ease-of-use with such sophisticated features as dual document windows, a control panel and incremental graphics rotation and four-color separation capabilities. It should now provide stiffer competition for Xpress. Quark's $895 Xpress 3.2 for Macintosh offers faster performance, additional color capabilities and support for programming scripts.
