With the United States economy deteriorating faster than expected, there is unlikely to be any recovery in the Australian economy until the end of 2001. This causes a problem for Australian Prime Minister John Howard, who needs to choose a strategically favourable date for the forthcoming election.

Issues are presented concerning the slowdown which has occurred in the economy of Australia during the fourth quarter of 2000. The expected slowdown by 6.5% in global trade to 5.9% in 2001 is discussed.
