Failure gives Alcan CEO second wind

Montreal, Que.-based Alcan Aluminium Holdings Ltd. is negotiating a merger agreement with Zurich, Switzerland-based Alusuisse-Lonza Holding AG. Alcan, which is led by president and chief executive officer Jacques Bougie, lost its bid for a three-way merger with Alusuisse-Lonza and Paris, France-based Pechiney S.A.

Pechiney fuels soaring Alcan profit: Former rival drives most of huge gains
Article Abstract:
Montreal-based Alcan Inc.'s takeover of former rival Pechiney SA reported a profit of $167 million or 45 cents a share for the three months ended Sept. 30, 2004, as compared to $87 million for the same period the previous year. Alcan acquired Pechiney to increase its size and holdings in high-margin areas of the aluminum business such as aerospace manufacturing.
