U.S. sues cigarette makers for 'fraud'
Article Abstract:
The US government has filed a 131-page civil lawsuit against the tobacco industry for alleged consumer fraud and racketeering by conspiring for 45 year to conceal the health risks of smoking. The government is seeking to recoup the more than $20 billion of tax dollars spent annually to treat smoking-related illnesses through Medicare and other healthcare programs. However, the tobacco industry countered that it will move for its dismissal because the government has no legal authority to file the suit.
