Players too crazy to be coaches
Article Abstract:
Only 5 of 229 NHL coaches had been goalkeepers. So few goalkeepers become coaches because their personalities tend to be different from those of other hockey players. Goalkeepers must maintain tighter control of their emotions, and they have too much time to think about their responsibilities.

Modern goalies hide behind their masks

Hockey goaltenders are now protected by high-tech masks that allow them to employ aggressive maneuvers without fear that they will be scarred for life. In earlier days, goalies played without masks. Former Bruin goalie Eddie Johnson broke his nose seven times during his career.

The brave souls behind the masks

Many modern goalies are praised if they can play more than ten games in a row without substitution, but in the early days of the National Hockey League (NHL), poorly-equipped goaltenders often played entire seasons without rest. Until 1959, goalies did not even use masks.
