Playing it badly
Article Abstract:
Prime Minister John Howard held a narrow lead two weeks before the 1998 elections, but he may jeopardize that advantage by emphasizing the need for a goods and services tax. Australia has had poor fiscal management in recent years and faces a global economic crisis, so Howard should do all he can to reassure voters by emphasizing how he has prevented Australia from experiencing much effect of Asia's financial crisis. Additional taxes usually frighten voters.

Half-term Howard
Article Abstract:
Australian Prime Minister John Howard and his political party, The Liberals, are using leadership as a key reelection campaign theme. However, many observers and voters believe that Howard would not serve out a full term as prime minister if reelected. Speculation has Treasurer Peter Costello as Howard's likely successor.
