The alleged horrific killing of nine newborn babies over a period of 10 years by their mother, who then buried them inside flowerpots, a sand-filled aquarium and a handbag, mesmerized Germany in August 2005. However, the real scandal erupted when a western politician pointed out that such brutal and unusual crimes are much more common in the former German Democratic Republic as easterners struggle to deal with the psychological and social legacy of a half century's dictatorship.
